Cameroon

The country is called "Africa in miniature" for its geological and cultural diversity. Natural features include beaches, deserts, mountains, rainforests, and savannas.

Cameroon is home to over 200 different ethnic and linguistic groups. The country is well known for its native styles of music, particularly makossa and bikutsi, and for its successful national football team. English and French are the official languages.

The highest point is Mount Cameroon in the southwest, and the largest cities are Douala, Yaoundé, and Garoua.

Agricultural products include: coffee, cocoa, cotton, rubber, bananas, oilseed, grains, root starches; livestock and timber.

Major trading partners include: Spain, Italy, UK, France, U.S., South Korea, Netherlands, Nigeria, Belgium, China and Germany.

The national flag of Cameroon was adopted in its present form on May 20, 1975 after Cameroon became a unitary state. The previous flag of Cameroon (1961-1975) had a similar colour scheme, but with two yellow stars in the upper half of the green. The colour scheme uses the traditional Pan-African colours, and the tricolor design is adapted from the flag of France. The centre stripe stands for unity: red is the colour of unity, and the star is referred to as "the star of unity". The yellow stands for the sun, and also the savannas in the northern part of the country, while the green is for the forests in the southern part of Cameroon.

Did you know that Cameroons motto is "Peace - Work - Fatherland"?
