China has one of the world's oldest people and continuous civilizations, consisting of states and cultures dating back more than six millennia. It has the world's longest continuously used written language system, and is the source of such major inventions as what the British scholar and biochemist Joseph Needham called the "four great inventions of Ancient China": paper, the compass, gunpowder, and printing.

Ice cream was invented in China around 2000BC when the Chinese packed a soft milk and rice mixture in the snow. China is the fourth largest country in the world. China is sometimes a day ahead of the United States.

The Chinese year is based on the cycles of the moon.   This is called a lunar schedule.  A complete cycle of the Chinese calendar takes 60 years.  The Chinese calendar dates back to 2600 B.C.  It is the oldest known calendar.

An animal represents each year.  There are twelve animals, which represent the twelve months.

We know that the Chinese grew rice as long as 5000 BC Archaeologists have found rice grains in farming tools and pots from that period.

Agricultural products include: rice, wheat, potatoes, corn, peanuts, tea, millet, barley, apples, cotton, oilseed; pork; fish

Major trading partners: U.S., Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Taiwan.

China's national flag was adopted in September 1949. This flag was first flown in Tiananmen Square on October 1, 1949 - the day of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

The rectangular flag has a red field with five golden-yellow stars (each with five points) in the upper left corner. The star on the left is larger than the other four.

The red colour of the flag symbolizes revolution. The large star symbolizes the Communist Party (which rules China) and the smaller stars represent the people of China.

Did you know people that it is considered good luck for the gate to a house to face south?
